Upcoming UN Human Rights Council Side Event to Spotlight the Silenced Genocide in Sudan
Yaslam Altayeb to Speak on Crimes Against Humanity and Global Inaction
Geneva, June 18, 2025 – As the humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan reaches unprecedented levels, an urgent UN Human Rights Council (UN HRC) side event titled “Silenced Genocide in Sudan” is set to take place on Wednesday, June 18 at 3 PM GMT / 4 PM Geneva and Sudan Time. This critical forum aims to spotlight the mass atrocities and ethnic cleansing campaigns unfolding across Sudan—crimes that continue to be met with alarming silence by the international community.
Representing The Right Narrative, our own Yaslam Altayeb will be one of the key speakers at the event. He will deliver a powerful message on behalf of Sudanese civilians, shedding light on the horrors they face daily and calling for immediate international action to stop the genocide.
A Genocide in Real Time
For over two years, the people of Sudan have endured relentless violence at the hands of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militias. What began as a power struggle in April 2023 has evolved into a full-scale campaign of ethnic cleansing, particularly targeting communities in Darfur, Khartoum, and Kordofan.
Entire towns have been razed. Tens of thousands of civilians have been killed. Women and girls have been subjected to mass rape. Millions have been displaced, starving, and abandoned in camps without international protection.
Despite the mounting evidence and desperate calls for help, the global community has remained largely silent.
A Platform for the Voiceless
The upcoming side event at the UN HRC is a rare and critical platform for Sudanese voices to be heard. Yaslam Altayeb will speak alongside survivors, legal experts, and human rights advocates. He will address:
- The scale and nature of the crimes being committed by the RSF
- The role of foreign governments and regional powers in arming and enabling the genocide
- The failure of international mechanisms to stop the violence or protect civilians
- A call to recognize the atrocities as genocide and hold perpetrators accountable
“This is not just a war,” Altayeb says ahead of the event. “It is an orchestrated campaign of ethnic annihilation. The world has a moral and legal obligation to intervene. We cannot afford another Rwanda. Not again. Not in Sudan.”

Global Silence, Sudanese Suffering
To date, over 10 million people have been displaced, and tens of thousands killed. In Al-Geneina, Darfur, entire communities have been exterminated. Yet major world powers have failed to formally recognize the crisis as genocide, and no coordinated international effort has been launched to protect civilians.
While some humanitarian aid trickles in, it is woefully insufficient. Worse, arms and resources continue to flow to the perpetrators from foreign allies, particularly the United Arab Emirates, who have been repeatedly accused of supplying the RSF with weapons and logistical support.
What This Event Hopes to Achieve
The “Silenced Genocide in Sudan” event is intended to break through the wall of silence surrounding Sudan’s suffering. It seeks to:
- Inform the global community and media about the true scale of the atrocities
- Push governments and institutions to recognize and respond to the genocide
- Mobilize public support for international investigations and sanctions
- Empower Sudanese voices to shape the narrative and demand justice
